Turkey

I am so lucky to have family living in some fantastic places, Turkey being one of them so we try to visit every year. We spend some time in rural Turkey which I call the real Turkish experience as there are no tourists here just everyday life it is very laid back and family orientated. We also spend some time on the coast usually in Bodrum a popular tourist destination. It’s a lovely town very lively in the summer months, we always have a great time and I love being beside the sea!

Some of my favourite things about Turkey…

It is very family orientated, I like the way everyone eats together as a family. Turkish people are well-known for their hospitality and visiting a Turkish home you  will feel very welcome and be very well fed.

Traditionally in Turkey meals are served on a large tray, placed on a blanket or tablecloth on a low table or on the floor and everyone sits around the prepared dishes in a circle. I can only speak from my personal experiences as food preferences and preparations do vary by family, region and ethnicity in Turkey.

This is a typical breakfast and breakfast happens to be one of my favourite meals.

Served with hot sweet black tea. You drink tea here all day, every day and it is a huge part of Turkish culture. Everywhere you go you will be offered tea. Spot the double teapot!

Going to the Market

Turkish food markets

I love the food markets here, Turkey is one of the few countries in the world that produces enough food to feed its people.  This means you find lots of fresh, locally grown ingredients everywhere not just in the market often people sell fruit and veg by the road or outside the home. It is also very cheap so people eat lots of vegetable based dishes.

The fruit tastes amazing and here in Bodrum, it is try before you buy they will give you a slice of peach and if you like it you buy it from them, there is lots of competition in the market. You certainly don’t get that in Asda!!!
